Charles H. Martin, former publisher of the Norwood News, and for the past 51 years a resident of Norwood, died at his winter home in Gibsonton, Florida, Tuesday, Feby. 27. On Saturday Mr. Martin suffered a paraletic stroke, from which he failed to rally and died the following Tuesday.
Funeral services were held in Tampa, Fla., Thursday and the body was shipped to Norwood arrived there on Saturday evening. On Sunday afternoon the body was placed in the vault in Riverside cemetery to await burial next spring.
Rev. Royston Cuddy, pastor of the Congregational Church officiated at the service Sunday. The local Masonic body of which deceased was a member, will have charge of the burial service in the spring.
Mr. Martin was born in Gouverneur. At an early age he began his printing career with Mr. Tracey in the Commercial Advertiser office in Canton. On March 21, 1882, he entered a partnership with W. J. Fletcher and purchased the Norwood News of the late B. G. Parker, founder of the News. In May of the same year he dissolved partnership with Mr. Fletcher and took as business partner James Bean. This partnership continued until Feb. 3, 1885, when Fred R. Smith purchased the interests of Mr. Bean and the firm name became Smith & Martin. This partnership continued 25 years when on June 1, 1910, A. H. Nickerson purchased The News, Messrs Smith & Martin retiring from the business.
On April 24, 1877, he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Finian. Mrs. Martin died in 1928.
Surviving are one son, Robert Martin of Gibsonton, Fla., and one daughter, Mrs. Helen Martin Goldie, Norwood, and two grand-daughters, Helen and Emily Ann Goldie.
