Auto Crashes Into Train At Crossing In Norwood
Harvey Hale and Son-in-law Have a Narrow Escape
Harvey Hale and son-in-law Mr. Ayers of Hannawa Falls, narrowly escaped serious if not fatal accident at the Main street crossing on the Rutland at Norwood last Thursday noon, when their Dodge car crashed into train No. 3 which was late.
Mr. Hale and Mr. Ayers had come to Norwood to do some trading with the H. M. Kinsman Co. and arrived there just after 12 o'clock. As they approached the Main street crossing, seeing no flagman, they proceeded, and when within a few feet of the crossing observed the train which was approaching the crossing. Mr. Hale at once applied his brakes, but owing to the icy condition of the road the wheels slid on the smooth road surface and the car crashed into the side of the train. When the car struck the train the front end was swung around, breaking off the right front wheel and badly damaging the front mud guards. Both occupants escaped uninjured.
The accident occurred during the noon hour, when flagman John Robinson was at his dinner. When the flagman was first stationed at this point it was customary to put on a relief man during the absence of the regular flagman, but late years this has not been done.
