1908--Railroad to Chase Mills

The following article was originally from the September 1, 1908 Norwood News, and reprinted in the September 6, 1938 edition of the Canton Commercial Advertiser:

Saturday was a red letter day at Chase Mills, when the people of that bustling little village celebrated the completion of the Norwood-St. Lawrence railroad extension to that place. Early Saturday morning pretty nearly all the people of the northern part of St. Lawrence County were headed toward "Croco" in every kind of conveyance imaginable, except perhaps, flying machines and steam rollers. The Norwood & St. Lawrence railroad ran three excursion trains. Automobiles were there from Norfolk, Norwood, Raymondville, Potsdam, Waddington, Massena, Canton, Madrid and Ogdensburg, loaded to capacity, and carriages from all parts of the countryside. At eleven o'clock a good part of the crowd was rounded up at the speaker's stand, when short addresses were made by Messrs. C.H. Remington, Mayor Hugo John Weeks and H. A. Nims of Watertown; Supervisor W. F. Wilson of Louisville Robert Thompson of Waddington, Barney Nowland of Chase Mills, and F. J. Merriman of Madrid.

The good people of the village rose to the occasion by decorating their houses and business places with bunting and flags. They strung a banner across the railroad tracks welcoming the visitors and then more than made good by serving a free dinner to everybody.

After dinner the crowd was entertained with music by the Chase Mills band and a rattling game of baseball by the Waddington and Norfolk teams, the score being 11 to 8 favor of Waddington. In the evening the younger portion of the crowd shook the light fantastic toe in Creighton's Hall.
