Norwood In 1904

Mr. F. E. McCarthy, of the St. Lawrence River Power Co., of Massena, was in Norwood last week, looking over the territory with a view of transmitting electric power from Massena this way. It is proposed to transmit power to Gouverneur for all purposes, taking in on the line Norwood, Potsdam, Canton, Ogdensburg, Dekalb and Gouverneur, providing enough encouragement can be had to warrant the undertaking. If this line be assured it will eventually be extended to Watertown and intermediate points.-Norwood News.

From the Norwood News: A good story is told on some of Potsdam's young men who went swimming up the Racquette one day and forgot to take along their swimming suits. The boys undressed and had swum well out into the river when a young Normal school couple came along all unconscious of their surroundings and sat themselves down near the clothes to "spoon". For a while the boys out in the river enjoyed the situation, but as time wore on and still the young couple showed no disposition to move, it grew monotonous and soon became serious. For nearly two hours they waited as patiently as possible for the lovers to move on and then, chilled to the marrow and in sheer desperation, they swam to an island, hid themselves among the bushes and after another half hours' wait, hailed a passing fisherman and hired him to row over and get their clothes.

At the special village election held last Saturday, for the purpose of voting upon the question of bonding the village for $5,000, the money to be used for constructing concrete sidewalks, was carried. In all 77 votes were cast of which 49 were for the resolution and 28 against. We understand this money is not to be borrowed all in one issue, but as it is needed from time to time. About ten or fifteen hundred dollars will be expended this fall.-Norwood News

A new variety of potato is on the market, and is an experiment. Edson H. Morgan, of this place procured five of these potatoes, weighing one pound, and planted them. He dug them last Saturday, the yield being eighty-three and one-half pounds of good eating potatoes.-Norwood News.

From the Friday, October 28, 1904 edition of the Potsdam St. Lawrence Herald:

The dam of the Frost Paper company is about completed and the water is raising in the pond and is within four or five feet of where it will ordinarily stand after the water is shut in. Spreading out over a large territory it is floating down many logs, stumps, and tree stubs, which keep a good sized gang of men pulling them out from the racks of the new bulkheads.-Norwood News.
