(The following article is from the Thursday, July 27, 2006 edition of the Daily Courier-Observer, under the heading "From The Archives" installment # 52, "a series of newspaper articles from the greater Potsdam area over the past two centuries, compiled by the Potsdam Museum staff for the community's Bicentennial celebration this year".

June 7, 1866--Officers Gurley and Freeman, of this village, seized several boxes of Fenian arms at Potsdam Junction (Norwood) on Friday night last. Having no force at their disposal they could only formally take possession of the arms and lock them up in a (railroad) car. The Fenians however, refused to recognize any authority less than the Sec. Of War, and when they wanted the arms quietly broke into the car and took them. The Fenians are ticketed through as "laborers", and of course couldn't go on without their tools…Tuesday noon there were about 150 Fenians left at Potsdam Junction, and they were awaiting transportation to Malone.
